What it’s like using Apple’s new AirPods

AirPods are Apple’s new wireless headphones launching in October.

They cost $159 and can do a lot more than just let you listen to music. Here’s a quick look at how they work.

The AirPods come with this magnetic charging case.

Each AirPod has its own battery that lasts up to five hours.

The case has a battery too.

You charge it through the Lightning port.

AirPods look nearly identical to Apple’s wired EarPods.

They’re really small, so you have to be careful not to lose them.

They’ll work with any iPhone running iOS 10.

You can also pair them to any standard Bluetooth audio device.

Since the iPhone 7 doesn’t have a headphone jack, Apple is pushing Lightning headphones or wireless headphones like the AirPods.

Pairing is really easy. You just open the case when it’s next to your iPhone and a window pops up, prompting you to pair.

Apple solved a major problem here. You no longer have to poke through settings and wait forever for your device to pair to Bluetooth. This is thanks to a new chip inside each AirPod called the W1.

The W1 acts as the “brains” of each AirPod and helps manage power, pairing, and lets the iPhone know when the AirPods are being worn.

They look kind of goofy though.

Sound quality is pretty good and you can activate Siri by double tapping one of the AirPods.

Siri is also used for controls like raising the volume or pausing music. It’s not an ideal solution. It would’ve been better if there were more control options without Siri. However, you can still control your music directly on your phone.
