Some good news for Malaysia: the capital Kuala Lumpur is ranked no. 7 in the Arcadis Sustainable Cities Index 2016. It beat Bangkok (9), Hanoi (14) and Jakarta (15) but still trailed Singapore which took pole position.

Ever since the global oil slump, Malaysia has been the subject of a gloomy economic outlook. Its currency, the ringgit, fell to the lowest in more than two months despite a climb from its Asian peers including the South Korean won.

Arcadis, a global design and consultancy firm, commissioned the Centre for Economic and Business Research to compile the index based on three categories: society, environment, and economy. The overall index analyses 32 different indicators and is broken down into three sub-indices across each category.

Apart from being the second-most sustainable city in Southeast Asia, the Malaysian capital also scored well in the scored relatively well in the “people” and “profit” sub-indices.
